How to properly secure a wheelchair before transit.

Securing a wheelchair in a wheelchair van is an important safety measure to ensure that the wheelchair and its user are safe while in transit. As you may already know, safety is a priority here at Semper Transportation. We thought it would be best to share our best practices with everyone. Nevertheless, here are a few guidelines we follow at Semper Transportation on properly securing a wheelchair in a wheelchair van:

  1. Choose the right tie-down system: There are several options available for securing a wheelchair in a wheelchair van, including straps, belts, and brackets. Choose a system that is appropriate for the size and weight of your wheelchair and that meets the safety standards of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

  2. Position the wheelchair correctly: Place the wheelchair in the van so that it is facing the front or back of the vehicle, rather than sideways. This helps reduce the likelihood of the wheelchair tipping over to its side during transit.

  3. Secure the wheels: The front and rear wheels of the wheelchair should be locked in place using the tie-down system. This will help prevent the wheelchair from rolling or sliding while in transit.

  4. Check your work! After securing the wheelchair, check the tie-down system to ensure that it is properly tightened and that all components are functioning correctly.

  5. Test the stability: Before you begin your journey, test the stability of the wheelchair by gently shaking it to ensure that it is securely in place.

By following these steps, you can help to ensure that your wheelchair is properly secured in your wheelchair van, providing a safe and comfortable ride for you and your loved ones.
